Angelman Syndrome (AS) is a neuro-genetic disorder similar to autism that occurs in one in 15,000 births. Characterized by severe intellectual and developmental disability, sleep disturbance, seizures, jerky movements, hand-flapping and frequent laughter or smiling, Angelman Syndrome appears in newborns and lasts for a lifetime. There is no specific therapy for Angelman Syndrome although seizure treatments, physical and occupational therapies, communication therapy, and behavioral therapies are important in allowing individuals with Angelman syndrome to reach their maximum developmental potential. Although great strides have been made to improve the lives of individuals with Angelman Syndrome, continued research is key to not only improvement, but finding a cure.
